- Audemars Piguet's iconic model, the Royal Oak, was designed by Gérald Genta in 1972. This model shocked the watchmaking world, as it was the first time a luxury steel watch was introduced. This happened when the company was going through a difficult period.
- The model featured an octagonal shaped bezel attached by eight hexagonal gold screws. The design was inspired by the underwater world: Royal Oak was the name of a group of eight ships from the British Royal Navy.
- The Royal Oak was not an immediate success. Sales took off in 1974 when the model was presented to the public by Gianni Agnelli, Fiat's president.
- The Royal Oak 15400 by Audemars Piguet was introduced in 2012 to replace the previous version, the 15300. Overall, it has the same features, but there are a few differences:
- The case size increases from 39 to 41 mm. The two iconic markers are back at 12 o'clock and the "AP" logo is moved below the two markers.
- The date window has been moved slightly due to the presence of a marker at 3 o'clock.
- The watch uses the same Caliber as the 15300, the 3120.
